Introducing Adam Ray Lake

Adam Ray Lake joined our family on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 10:17 am.  He weighed 7 lbs 13 oz and was 20.5 inches long.  We went in to the hospital at 8:00 am and were wheeled back into the operating room right on time.  I got my spinal at 9:59 am for a 10:00 scheduled surgery.  I thought it was pretty good to be on time!  The only issue we had in pre-op was that my veins were really small, so they were having a hard time getting an IV in.  They loaded me up with fluids and antibiotics (since I was group b strep positive) and had me drink something to neutralize the acid in my stomach - it tasted really weird.  I got to walk back to the operating room with Jed, Patty, Christine, and the Potter girls in tow.   Ethan was still at home with Granny and Grandpa.  They were planning on heading up when I went in to surgery.  The spinal didn't hurt near as much as I anticipated.  They got me all prepped and ready to go then Jed came in to the operating room.  Dr. Dickson informed everyone that Jed would be telling everyone the sex of the baby.  The anesthesiologist was really nice and told me to let him know if I started to feel nauseous.  At this point I was, so I told him so.  The intense pressure as they took the baby was not pleasant at all.  I have always had low blood pressure, but at this point my blood pressure started dropping very low.  At one point during my surgery it was as low as 60s/20s.  This of course made me get sick.  The anesthesiologist was giving me stuff to raise my blood pressure, but I ended up getting sick when they took Adam from me and again when they were stitching me back up.  Getting sick without being able to feel your abdomen is the weirdest feeling ever.  When they got the baby out Jed announced to me that we had our Adam (if baby Lake was a girl, she would have been Amy Kay).  I was so happy and feeling better at this point.  Jed got to spend quite a bit of time with Adam while I was getting stitched back up and unfortunately when he brought Adam over to me for the first time I was getting sick.  I was still so incredibly happy though!  By the end of the surgery I did get to hold Adam on my chest.  We were then wheeled to recovery where I tried to feed Adam and they tried to get my blood pressure up.  Jed went to go get Ethan to bring him back.  Ethan was interested, but not for very long.  His first reaction when he held Adam was to ask why Adam didn't talk to him or say hi.  After a little more time in recovery, my parents, Jed's mom, Christine, Potter girls, and Ethan came back to meet Adam.  Everyone was so excited.  After I could feel my legs again we were wheeled to my post partum room.  We got there around 1:00.

38 weeks 6 days - Baby #2

I cannot believe that baby day is tomorrow!!  I wanted to make sure to get these last pictures taken.  I have been feeling pretty good overall.  Small aches and pains and contractions, but nothing that would lead me to believe that I would been having the baby early.  I had Ethan home all week, so we tried to do something special every day.  It wore me out, but I was really glad we did.  I gained a total of 13 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight, and 22 pounds total with my 9 pound weight loss in the beginning.  I am very happy with the weight gain this pregnancy.

38 weeks 1 day - Baby #2

I cannot believe baby time is so incredibly close!  This is probably my second to last pregnancy post!  I had a dr's appointment this past Friday where I strangely enough had lost 3 pounds.  My guess is weight was just fluctuating and I will be up a lot more tomorrow, haha!  Strangely enough I am only up 9 lbs from my pre pregnancy weight with a total weight gain of 18 lbs (including the 9 lbs I lost at the beginning).  Definitely different and better than the 40 lbs I gained with Ethan.  I was 1 cm dialated, but still not anywhere close to going into labor on my own.  Good thing I'm not waiting for that!  The best part of this appointment was that we got to have a sonogram.  My placenta had been in the way of where they would cut for the c-section at 20 weeks, so she just wanted to make sure that it had moved (it had!).  We got to see some awesome profile pictures as well as hands, feet, spine, heart, etc.  She estimated the baby at 7 lbs 7 oz (69th percentile).  Ironically at my 37 week sonogram with Ethan he was estimated at 7 lb 6 oz (69th percentile).  I am not sure I trust the sonogram weight estimates at all, and I am delivering a week and a day earlier with that baby, so we shall see.  I am officially guessing it will be a boy, 8 lbs 6 oz, 21 inches long.

I have been having feeling fairly decent all things considered.  My back has been hurting a little more and I have been feeling some definite painful kicks and movements.  I had been having a lot of braxton hicks contractions, but they seem to have slowed down.  There are times I feel great and other times I feel very uncomfortable.  Sleep has been about the same - awake about 3-4 times a night.  I can't wait to sleep on my back again!  My hips are hurting a little, but not near what they were with Ethan.  The other awesome thing is that this summer hasn't been near as hot as when I was pregnant with Ethan.  This week is in the 70's!  When I was pregnant with Ethan every day was 100 or over!

Daycare is closed this week on vacation, so we are trying to do lots of fun things.  I am still having trouble processing that Ethan only has a few more days left of being an only child.  I'm excited to see him in his role as a big brother.  I think he will do great.  We hung out with my friend's 1 year old a lot lately, and he loved bringing me her diaper and helping me change her.  He says he is going to help with the baby's stinky diapers, I sure hope so!

36 weeks 1 day - Baby #2

I have had quite a few uneventful weeks lately, which has been good.  I gained a little too much weight a few weeks ago, but then did much better during this dr appointment.  All my measurements have been right on track.  Sometimes I feel like I'm huge, other times I feel like I was a lot bigger last time.  I haven't had the back pain that I had with Ethan or the hip pain yet, so hopefully that continues to stay away!  I can't believe I have just under 3 weeks to go until the c-section.

Ethan is doing fairly well when we talk about him being a big brother.  We went to a class at the hospital tonight that was focused on him as a sibling.  We got to tour the hospital and he got to hold a baby doll.  I hope it helped him.

We have been having a pretty good summer so far, I feel like it is flying by!  I can't believe it is already July.  I have been getting a few more things done around the house to get ready for the baby.  I need to continue doing some cleaning and organizing.  I have not been enjoying the heat and humidity.  I had to stop wearing my wedding rings again.

Sleep has been getting interesting lately.  I have been getting up multiple (3-4) times a night to go to the bathroom unfortunately.  I am getting very tired of sleeping on my side.  I think I wake up so much because I end up on my back, which wakes me up.  Jed said my breathing always sounds labored when I am on my back.  I got a minor cold last week with a slight sore throat.  I ended up passing the cold on to Jed, who then passed it back to me.  The second time around was worse with major sinus pressure.  We then passed it on to Ethan unfortunately.  Hopefully we all get better soon!
